I recently discovered the average shopkeeper is unwilling to buy stolen goods (how they know they are stolen, I do not know).
Is there anyway for me to sell stolen items, without making use of the console?

You're going to need access to a Fence if you want to sell your bucket-gotten gains. The Thieves guild provides access to them (after completing the 2nd quest). Delta force xtreme 2 updates.

The standard route is through Guild fences or by achieving a high-level speech perk that allows you to do so. I'm not a big fan of the speech perks, though - by the time you get to the high-level benefits, you don't really need them anymore - and Guild fences are few and far between even after going through the Guild quest line.
An alternative, for the skilled pickpocket, is to reverse-pickpocket your stolen items onto bandits or other enemies. Then kill them. Then take your legitimately-earned loot, without 'stolen' tags, from the corpse.

The thieves guild is in Riften. After a couple initiation quests you will be allowed to sell all stolen goods to Tonilia.

I read if you drop an item in front of a friendly hero they will pick it up and give it to you. This removes the stolen 'tag' on the item.

It aways bothers me that any guard or merchant can know exactly which salt pile or minor health potion in my inventory is stolen. A garnet nicked from a desk in Winterhold can't be taken to the jewelry stall in Whiterun. Are there any mods which make this more realistic? Perhaps most stolen items wouldn't count as stolen outside of their original hold, and mundane items like ingredients and lock picks don't count as stolen unless you're caught red handed since they are realistically untraceable. In Morrowind guards would still take all your stolen contraband but also you could sell hot items to merchants without them knowing their origins, and selling something stolen from someone back to them would result in them calling you out for it and reporting you to the guards which added another layer of immersion. I understand this would make fences a less valuable resource, but at the same time I feel they shouldn't be necessary unless you want to sell them a valuable item like an enchanted sword or a jeweled ring whose owner could feasibly identify it.
